STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. - Spokane County Sheriff's Office spokesman Deputy Craig Chamberlin says one man is dead following a shootout in Stevens County.

Chamberlin said an off-duty Stevens County Detective was responding to a home in an isolated area on Scott Road near the community Rice after a neighbor called the detective for help. The neighbor told the detective that a stranger was trying to kick in his door, and when the detective arrived at the home, the man turned and began firing a shotgun at the detective.

The detective ran around his vehicle to protect himself, fired back and hit the man, killing him. During the gunfight, the detective, who has not been identified was hit in the hand and ear by shotgun pellets. He is being treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and is expected to be ok.
