Gonzaga Falls to UW 7-1 in Lone Meeting

SEATTLE, Wash. – In the lone meeting with in-state rival University of Washington, the Gonzaga University baseball team dropped 7-1 Tuesday to the Huskies at Husky Ballpark.

The defeat moves the Zags to 9-14 on the year.

Beau Bozett rove in the lone Bulldog run in the game in the top of the eighth inning. The right-handed hitter crushed a ball over the left fielders head which allowed Troy Labrie to score.

Southpaw Will Abram made his second start of the season for the Bulldogs and got touched up for four runs in three innings. His record drops to 1-2.

UW built a 4-0 lead in the third inning when the first three batters reached off Abram. Husky Robert Pehl hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring the first run. Another sacrifice fly, a double to left field and a wild pitch scored three more runs putting the Zags in an early hole.

Play was halted in the in the top of the fourth inning due to rain. The delay lasted about 20 minutes before both sides took the field but rain continued to fall for the remainder of the game.

Right-hander Karl Myers relieved Abram after the rain delay. Myers held Washington at bay for his 2.0 innings of work. The senior did not allow a hit and struck out two.

David Bigelow replaced Myers in the sixth and immediately dealt with a jam. The first two batters reached and scored on a wild pitch and single to left field. Bigelow escaped the inning on catcher LaBrie throwing out a base runner at second base and a weak groundout.

Lefty Ben Brown, making his fourth appearance of the season, pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Derek Callahan pitched the eighth and allowed an unearned run on a hit and error.

Besides Bozett’s double, the other three Bulldog hits came from Taylor Jones, Cabe Reiten, and Nicholas Minteer. Jimmy Sinatro also notched his first stolen base in his collegiate career in the top of the second.

The defeat is the third consecutive to Washington.

After 23 road games to open the season, the Bulldogs finally open its 2014 home slate Friday against West Coast Conference foe Loyola Marymount University. The Lions are in Spokane for a three-game series.
