UPDATE: 30-year-old Stephen Corkery was shot and killed by Spokane police Wednesday night at a home on the corner of Grace & Maple in north Spokane. Corkery was shot after police say they gave several commands to come out of the home, when he did police say he did so holding a firearm and advanced towards police.

Police say Corkery was being investigated for several recent robberies at several different businesses. Court documents reveal that items matching the description of the robbers clothing were recovered at Corkery's home and inside his SUV. Police recovered a black ski mask, a black semi-automatic handgun and several pieces of clothing described by store clerks who were robbed.

Court documents also say Corkery wrote two notes and gave them to a friend after she confronted him about his possible involvement in the recent robberies. Court documents say Corkery told the friend that "When it all goes down, give" the note, "to police."

One note, police say said that Corkery was alone in the robberies he may be implicated in. The second note according to detectives was an apology letter to Corkery's friends and family.

Friends who spoke with KHQ's Dylan Wohlenhaus Thursday say Corkery knew he was being investigated for the recent robberies and told them that he "was not going back to prison."

UPDATE: KHQ obtained video of Wednesday night's officer involved shooting at Maple and Grace. The video shows Spokane police officers opening fire on a man they believe robbed the Baskin-Robbins on N. Monroe Tuesday afternoon. At around 7 p.m. Wednesday night police were outside the man's home trying to get him to surrender to officers. Instead, the man came outside, and officers say he was carrying a gun. The man refused to comply with police orders to drop the gun, and that's when officers opened fire, shooting multiple times, hitting and killing the robbery suspect.

Several medics and police officers themselves attempted First Aid, but it was too late. Police say a handgun was found near his body. Spokane Police chief Frank Straub said officers had been watching the man for hours.

It's not clear if this man is connected to all 11 of the robberies that have happened throughout Spokane in the past month.

Note: KHQ has made the editorial decision to omit the shooting itself, however we have still-framed the moment before the shooting took place and kept the audio. This video was taken by a citizen and the voices you hear are their reaction to the shooting. They are not affiliated in any way with KHQ-TV. This video is not meant to do anything other than show the events that took place last night in as raw a form as possible. A thorough investigation will be completed and investigators will use this video to fill in the complete picture of what happened Wednesday night, at Maple and Grace, around 7 p.m.

UPDATE: The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team (SIRR) is continuing to investigate the officer involved shooting that occurred Wednesday night in the 1500 block of West Grace. The Spokane Police department responded to the location Wednesday evening at approximately 7:00 pm.

Officers made contact with a male who they believed was a suspect in multiple armed robberies. Officers first attempted to negotiate with the armed suspect, using a patrol car public address system. The suspect failed to respond to verbal commands to surrender and exited the residence still armed with a handgun. Officers discharged their issued service weapons and the suspect was stopped.

Officers on scene, including a SWAT medic provided emergency first aid to the suspect until paramedics arrived. The suspect later died after being transported to an area hospital.

SIRR detectives finished gathering evidence at the residence around 3:00 a.m. The scene was then turned over to Spokane Police Department Major Crimes detectives who executed a search warrant related to an on-going investigation into a series of armed robberies.

SIRR detectives will continue to process evidence, interview witnesses and interview all the officers involved with this incident. The identity and cause of death of the suspect will be released by the Spokane County Medical Examiner. Detectives encourage anyone with additional information to contact the Washington State Patrol at 509 227-6566.

The SIRR team is comprised of detectives from the Spokane Police Department, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol and Airway Heights Police Department. The Washington State Patrol is the managing agency for this investigation. The Spokane Police Department will release the names of the officers involved. Once the SIRR team completes the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

A robbery investigation quickly turned into an officer involved shooting Wednesday evening near Maple and Grace in north Spokane.

Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub says his officers were in the area investigating a recent robbery. There have been 11 robberies in the area since the end of February, however Chief Straub wouldn't say which specific robbery officers were investigating, or if it was related to multiple robberies. However detectives received information about a possible suspect in a recent armed robbery and had the home under surveillance when the suspect appeared.

Knowing the suspect had been armed in at least one robbery, the detectives called in the SWAT team as they attempted to get the man out of the house using a PA system.

The man eventually came out of the house and witnesses say he had a gun in his left hand. Chief Straub said in a press conference that while speaking with officers, the suspect made a threatening move and that's when officers opened fire. Straub never said the suspect was armed, but did say a weapon was recovered at the scene on the porch close to where the suspect was standing.

KHQ Local News Reporter Patrick Erickson heard the shots just as he was pulling up to the scene and witnesses told him they heard at least six rounds fired.

Straub says his men began to give medical attention to the wounded man immediately, and he was loaded up on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. A press release issued by Monique Cotton with the Spokane Police stated that the man died from his injuries at that hospital. He has not been identified. His name and official cause of death will be released by the Spokane County Medical Examiner.

The Washington State Patrol is handling the shooting investigation.

Spokane Police Major Crimes Detectives will continue their investigation into the series of armed robberies and will execute a search warrant at the home of the suspect.

This is a developing story and we will update you as soon as we get any additional information confirmed.
