SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University softball team used a five-run fifth inning to win the second game and split the series against Eastern Oregon in a nonconference matchup at Marks Field on Wednesday.

The Pirates improve to 19-7 overall, while the Mountaineers fall to 7-11 on the season.

Game 1 – Eastern Oregon 3, Whitworth 2

A pair of wild pitches allowed the Mountaineers to take an early 2-0 lead after the first at-bat, but Whitworth was able to cut the lead in a half in the bottom of the inning when junior Sacha Clow was walked with the bases loaded, allowing sophomore Megan John to put a run on the board for the Pirates.

Eastern Oregon added a run in the top of the third on an RBI double from Britnee Carman-Rice. The Pirates used their own RBI double from senior Julia Johnson to pull within a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Lindsey Walchli struck out the final two batters to keep the Mountaineers in the lead. The Pirates went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving Eastern Oregon a 3-2 win the opener.

Sacha Clow was 1-2 at the plate with a RBI. Freshman Shannon Wessel was walked twice and scored a run for the Pirates.

Junior Megan Fisher (0-1) took the loss, giving up two runs on one hit with one walk. Lindsey Walchli (6-7) earned the win, allowing one earned run on four hits with 11 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Game 2 – Whitworth 5, Eastern Oregon 2

The Mountaineers took an early 1-0 lead after JoElla Smith sent a pitch over center field wall. The Pirates stranded runners in the bottom of the first, third and fourth innings, unable to turn any of the hits into runs.

The Pirates turned up the heat in the bottom of the fifth inning, however. After senior Makenzie Hope walked, Megan John's single and sophomore Alyssa Hall’s bunt loaded the bases for Shannon Wessel. Wessel singled up the middle, scoring Hope and John to put the Pirates ahead on the scoreboard. Senior Julia Johnson followed Wessel with a three-run homer off the scoreboard to give Whitworth a 5-1 lead. The Mountaineers were able to plate one run in the top of the seventh, but the Pirates secured the final out of the game and clinched the 5-2 win.

Julia Johnson hit her sixth home run of the season, going 1-1 with three RBI and a run scored. Shannon Wessel was 2-3 at the plate with two RBI and Alyssa Hall was 2-4 with a run scored.

Freshman Madi Perez earned her 10th win in the circle, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout in three innings of work. Lindsey Walchli (6-8) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Whitworth hosts George Fox in a weekend doubleheader at Marks Field March 29-30. The first game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
