Marbut All Right After Accident, Cougs Fall to SJSU

PULLMAN, Wash. – Johnny Melero pitched 6 1/3 innings to lead San Jose to a 7-3 victory over Washington State at Bailey-Brayton Field, Thursday night.

Melero (1-3) allowed two runs on three hits, struck out two and walked three. The Spartans (8-18) scored in each of the first two innings to grab a 2-1 lead against the Cougars (9-13) and starter Jason Monda (1-2). Washington State’s first run came courtesy of a double by Trek Stemp and a run-scoring single by Yale Rosen.

In the fifth, San Jose State chased Monda during a four-rally to extend its lead to 6-1. The Cougars scored in the bottom of the inning on a RBI-ground out by Stemp. The Spartans added a run in the sixth against Sean Hartnett. Washington State capped the scoring in the eighth on a double by Rosen and an RBI-single by P.J. Jones.

The four-game series continues, Friday at 6 p.m.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University Head Baseball Coach Donnie Marbut was involved in an automobile accident, Thursday evening.

Marbut was on his way to the Cougars’ game against San Jose State at Bailey-Brayton Field. He was taken to Pullman Regional Hospital for observation and was released, Thursday night.

The Cougar skipper did not coach against the Spartans in the opener of the four-game series and is not expected to coach Friday night’s meeting with San Jose State.
