SPOKANE, Wash. - Charity Burland, a friend of 30-year-old Stephen Corkery says there was "more than" his criminal past.

"He was not just that person. That was an itty bitty piece of him," Burland told KHQ's Dylan Wohlenhaus on Friday.

Corkery was shot and killed by police Wednesday night after police say he ignored several commands to surrender and exited the home towards police with a gun.

Burland says she confronted Corkery about his alleged involvement in several recent Spokane robberies. She says after that he wrote two notes, one to Burland telling her to get off drugs, and the other apologizing to his family. Burland also says Corkery told her he was "not going back to prison."

"I think he wanted to die. I think he was ready. He was not going back to prison. Prison was not a good place for him," Burland said.

She believes Corkery knew he would be shot by police when he walked out of the home with a firearm and that's what he wanted.

"There was a person behind that. Whether he was a criminal or not he did not deserve to die that way," Burland recalled.

Police fired several shots at Corkery as he stepped outside the home. Corkery later died at the hospital.
