SPOKANE, Wash. - Jury selection in the trial of Gail Gerlach began on Monday.

Gerlach is being charged with Manslaughter in the shooting death of Brendon Kaluza-Graham one year ago. Gerlach left his SUV warming up in his driveway and says that he saw Kaluza-Graham get into his vehicle and begin driving away in an attempt to steal it. Gerlach then went outside armed with a handgun, and as Kaluza-Graham was driving away, Gerlach says he thought he saw Kaluza-Graham point a gun at him, so he fired a single shot. That shot went through the back window of the SUV and hit Kaluza-Graham in the head, killing him.

One year later, Gerlach is on trial for Manslaughter.

On Monday, jury selection began in the case with around 80 potential jurors being called in.

The first thing potential jurors had to do was fill out a questionnaire comprised of eight questions:
1.) Have you heard of this case before coming in today?
2.) Have you ever called 911 to report a crime?
3.) Have you ever belonged to or contributed to the NRA (National Rifle Association)?
4.) Have you ever belonged to contributed to the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)?
5.) Have you ever been convicted of a criminal offense?
6.) Would a two week trial be a hardship for you?
7.) Do you have any training in guns, gun law, criminal law or forensics?
8.) Anything else relevant to this case?

Out of the 80 potential jurors in the courtroom on Monday, only 6 answered "No" to all of the questions. The other 74 answered "Yes" to at least one of the questions.

Dismissals were granted to those with work conflicts, or their views on gun control. One potential juror was dismissed because they had two family members murdered and didn't think they could "sit in judgement of another person." A couple of potential jurors, despite having heard of the case, will be recalled on Tuesday for more questioning because they believe they can remain impartial.

During the court proceedings, Judge Plese also granted a motion to exclude Gerlach's wife from the courtroom, though the defense may at some time call her as a witness.

KHQ's Kelsey Watts will be following this story from start to finish, and you can follow along with her in real time on Twitter, just search for @GerlachTrial.

We of course will continue to update you on a day-to-day basis right here on khq.com and in our all of our newscasts.
