EWU Football to Face UW This Season and in 2019

It’s a long way off until 2019, but the Eastern Washington University football team has scheduled yet another appearance versus the University of Washington at recently-renovated Husky Stadium in Seattle, Wash.

In a match-up of foes who will play each other this coming Sept. 6, the Eagles from the Big Sky Conference and Huskies from the Pac-12 Conference will play again on Aug, 31, 2019.

Eastern opened the 2011 season at Husky Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two schools, and EWU nearly knocked off the Huskies in a 30-27 loss that came down to the final seconds. Even before that game was played, the two schools scheduled this year’s rematch and recently negotiated for 2019.

“We are extremely excited about playing Washington this season and again in 2019,” said Eastern athletic director Bill Chaves. “As I mentioned the last time we announced a game against UW, playing the Huskies is always a great opportunity for our school and football program. Given the roster makeup of our team, playing against the Huskies affords the many student-athletes we have from the west side of the state the opportunity to play at ‘home’ against Washington. This will again no doubt be a memorable experience and thrill for not only our players and coaches, but our fans and alumni as well.”

The new coach for the Huskies is Chris Petersen, and among his assistants are former Eagle coaches Jimmy Lake (also a former Eagle player), Rich Rasmussen and Pete Kwiatkowski. Washington finished 9-4 overall and 5-4 in the Pac-12 Conference a year ago, and defeated BYU 31-16 in the Fight Hunger Bowl.

Meanwhile, the Eagles won their first-ever game against a Pac-12 opponent when they opened the 2013 season with a 49-46 upset of 25th-ranked Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore. It was only the fourth time a team from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) has defeated a team from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.

The Eagles went on to finish 12-3 and enjoyed its first-ever 8-0 season in the Big Sky Conference. Eastern, the 2010 NCAA Division I champion, advanced to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs for the second-straight season and third in the last four years.

The Eagles will also play at Oregon in 2015 and Washington State in 2016, giving Eastern six-straight years of games against Pac 10 opponents. The Eagles are 1-9 versus current members of the Pac-12, including losses in 1907 and 1908 against Washington State, and a 2012 loss in Pullman. Eastern’s other games versus Pac-12 opponents have been against Washington (2011), Oregon State (2000, 2006, 2013), Arizona State (2002) and California (2009). Eastern has also played recent league newcomer Colorado (2008).

Eastern was a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for most of its history before becoming a member of FCS in 1984. But despite playing 27 games against NCAA Football Bowl Division members from 1983-2010 -- including four against the Pac-12 Conference -- the Eagles did not play Washington State or Washington during that time span.

The short 90-mile trek to Pullman, Wash., to face WSU in 2012 was the first varsity meeting between the two schools in more than 100 years. Eastern lost to the Cougars in 1907 (46-0) and 1908 (73-0), and were 8-10-1 from 1921-46 against WSU’s junior varsity or freshman teams.

The Eagles will play Washington State for the fourth time on Sept. 3, 2016, at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash. The Oregon game will be played on Sept. 5, 2015, at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. Eastern has never played the Ducks.

Including a season-opening 20-3 win at Idaho in 2012 and a 33-21 loss at Toledo in 2013, Eastern is now 10-22 all-time versus FBS teams.

EAGLES VS. FBS

Since the early 1980’s when it began the move to become a member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (in 1984), Eastern is now 9-22 all-time versus Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Against current Pac-12 Conference members, EWU now 1-7 (1-9 including losses to Washington State in 1907 and 1908) after a 49-46 upset of 25th-ranked Oregon State in 2013. Eastern has won two of its last four games versus FBS foes. A 35-17 win over Connecticut on Sept. 8, 2001, snapped a five-game losing streak versus FBS foes, then a 20-3 win at Idaho in 2012 snapped a 10-game skid. Here is Eastern’s complete list of games versus FBS members since 1983.
