Ducks Fly by Gonzaga Baseball

by Gonzaga Athletics

SPOKANE, Wash. – Caleb Wood hit his second home run of the season over the left field wall but 19th-ranked University of Oregon scored nine unanswered runs for a 14-5 victory over the Bulldogs Wednesday at Patterson Baseball Complex.

The game was called after the completion of the eighth inning due to a travel curfew for Oregon (21-8). Gonzaga (10-18) has lost four consecutive home games.

Wood, who homered in game one of the series Tuesday, had two of the Bulldogs 10 hits in the game. His solo shot came in the bottom of the first off Oregon starter Brando Tessar. However, Gonzaga’s slight 1-0 lead was short lived.

The Ducks responded with five-runs in the top of the second inning. Bulldog starter Derek Callahan (0-3) gave up a leadoff home run to Kyle Garlick. Oregon then loaded the bases for A.J. Balta who singled to left field bringing home two more. The final pair of runs scored on Wood fielding error and a sacrifice fly out to left field.

GU cut into the lead with three-runs in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Nick Brooks hit his first collegiate home run to left field to make the score 5-2. Payden Cawley Lamb was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for another. Jimmy Sinatro then hit a sacrifice to center field to make it a one-run game.

The Zags tied the game in the bottom of the fourth by taking advantage of an Oregon error. Lamb singled to start the inning and was able to advance to third on a failed pickoff attempt by right-handed pitcher Cooper Stiles. Sam Brown scored Lamb later in the frame on a sacrifice to right field.

Oregon distanced themselves in its next at bat with six-runs for an 11-5 lead. Gonzaga taxed its bullpen by using Will Abram, Ben Brown and Wyatt Mills in the inning as the Ducks scored on six hits and a GU fielding error.

The Ducks added another run in the sixth on a Mills wild pitch and two in the seventh inning on three hits. The 14-runs on 18 hits allowed in the game are both a season-high for the Bulldogs.

Right-handed pitcher David Bigelow also made an appearance in the game. The junior pitched a scoreless eighth inning in his seventh appearance of the year.

Wood, Lamb and Beau Bozett each had two hits on the afternoon and five different Zags accounted for an RBI.

Gonzaga has a quick turnaround as West Coast Conference action picks back up Friday. The Zags hit the road for a three-game series at University of San Diego starting Friday in the WCC’s Game of the Week. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. on the
