Linfield Softball Completes 4-Game Sweep on Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University softball team battled in a Northwest Conference doubleheader against the eighth ranked Linfield Wildcats at Marks Field on Sunday, but the Pirates came up short as Linfield prevailed in both games.

Whitworth falls to 22-12 on the season, with a 14-8 mark in the NWC. Linfield improves to 28-6 overall, 22-2 in the NWC.

Game 1 – Linfield 6, Whitworth 0
After the Pirates recorded three quick outs in the top of the first, senior Makenzie Hope hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, but was left stranded after stealing second. The teams followed a scoreless first with a scoreless second inning, but Linfield took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third on a pair of hits and a pair of errors.

In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Alyssa Hall hit a leadoff bunt and advanced to second on an error, but the Wildcats recorded three outs before Hall could score. Linfield used a two-hit, three run seventh inning to seal the 6-0 win.

Hope and Hall recorded Whitworth’s two hits of the game.

Karina Paavola (15-3) earned the win, giving up both hits with 20 strikeouts in six innings. Senior Taylor Gilbert (5-3) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in six innings.

Game 2 – Linfield 5, Whitworth 3
The series finale was a multi-run inning thriller. After a scoreless first inning, Linfield got things started with a two-run homer from Haylie Watson. Whitworth answered in the bottom of the inning as senior Julia Johnson led off with a double to right center. Sophomore pinch runner Brittany Connor scored as Linfield had a throwing error off freshman Shannon Wessel’s bunt. Junior Peyton McMahon hit an RBI double to send Wessel across the plate and McMahon scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from freshman Kelsey Stroshine.

Linfield added three runs in the top of the fourth on four hits to retake the lead. Whitworth put runners on in the final four innings, but was not able to push any of them across home plate and Linfield claimed the series sweep with a 5-3 win.

Shannon Wessel was 2-3 at the plate, with a run scored. Peyton McMahon and Julia Johnson both went 1-3, with McMahon batting in a run.

Shelby VandeBergh (9-2) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts in five innings of work. Freshman Makayla Lefever (3-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits with a walk in 3.1 innings in the circle.

Whitworth closes out the regular season on the road, traveling to Pacific Lutheran for a 4:00 p.m. makeup game on Thursday, April 10th.
