WSU Extends Daugherty's Contract to 2019

by Washington State Univ. athletics

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State Director of Athletics Bill Moos has extended head women’s basketball coach June Daugherty’s contract through the 2018-19 season, Moos announced Monday.

Terms of the deal were not announced.

“June, her staff and the entire team are to be commended for a truly fine season,” said WSU Director of Athletics Bill Moos. “Reaching the postseason for the first time in 23 years is a notable achievement.  I’m looking forward to watching this program continue to improve in the years to come.”

It is with a great deal of gratitude towards Bill Moos that I accept the extension offered upon my contract as head basketball coach,” Daugherty stated. “I am honored to have the opportunity to build upon the successful foundation that we have put into place. The dedication and hard work of our players is a real credit to their passion to represent the Crimson and Gray in a first class manner on and off the court. My coaching staff is to be commended upon their efforts for recruiting talented student-athletes of outstanding character to our great university and city of Pullman.

”I am extremely proud of our 100% graduation rate in the first seven years as head coach and appreciate the support from the best fans in college athletics. I am honored to mentor our student-athletes as we continue the climb to the NCAA championship in the near future.”

This past season, Daugherty led the Cougars to one of the best seasons in program history, earning a trip to the WNIT, the program’s first postseason appearance since 1991, and post 17 wins, the most since 1995-96. WSU also notched four wins over ranked teams, won nine conference games for the first time since 1994-95 and saw guards Lia Galdeira and Tia Presley both earn spots on the All-Pac-12 Team, the first pair of Cougar teammates to earn all-conference honors in the same season in program history.

Under Daugherty, Washington State has reached the Pac-12 Conference Tournament semifinals in two of the last three seasons, seen at least two players earn all-academic honors in each of the last six years and four players sign professional contracts to play overseas in the last two summers.
