NBCRightNow.com - April is National Donate Life Month, it is an effort to encourage more people to become registered organ donors.

Right now, there are more than 120,000 people waiting for organ transplants and 82 percent of them need kidneys

Zeny Meyers explained she was given the ultimate gift a chance to stay alive after a hereditary disease caused her kidney's to fail and she almost lost hope.

Now more than a decade later, she is loving life and is eternally grateful.

"He asked how long do I have before I have to get really bad that I need a transplant, the doctor said less than a year," said Meyers.

Meyers suffers from polycystic kidneys, a disease she inherited from her father.

She was diagnosed at 34 and about 10 years later, her kidneys started failing.

That is when she got an offer she was hesitant to accept.

"I contacted again my cousin and I asked her if she's serious about this and she said, I offered and my offer stands and you can have my kidney," she said.

Meyers got the transplant more than a decade ago and now volunteers educating people about the importance of becoming donors, she has already lost her brother to kidney failure and her sister and cousin are on waiting lists.

"If we have more organ donors or tissue donors we would save more lives and maybe my sister's," she said.

According to Life Center Northwest, 18 people nationwide die every day waiting for a transplant.

In Washington there are currently more than 1,800 people on the waiting list, more than 1,400 of those need kidneys.

"And with that I've seen my son get married, I've seen grandkids and I'm enjoying my life, I ride motorcycles, I am enjoying just living, every day is precious," she concluded.
