BOSTON (AP) - Vice President Joe Biden says the courage shown by Boston Marathon survivors and those who lost loved ones is an inspiration for other Americans dealing with loss and tragedy.
    
Biden spoke Tuesday at a ceremony in Boston honoring those killed and injured in the bombings near the finish line a year ago. He says four marathon survivors who spoke before he did showed "pure courage."
    
He also says that though he's not a Boston sports fan, Boston is an incredible city.
    
In Washington, President Barack Obama planned to observe the anniversary with a private moment of silence at the White House.
    
There will also be a flag-raising and a moment of silence at the marathon finish line at 2:49 p.m., when the bombs went off.

Solemn tributes mark Boston Marathon bombing
   
BOSTON (AP) - A tribute is underway in Boston for those killed and injured in the bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon a year ago.
   
Vice President Joe Biden, Massachusetts Gov. Deval (deh-VAL') Patrick and former Mayor Tom Menino (meh-NEE'-noh) are among those speaking at the invitation-only event at the Hynes Convention Center. Several survivors are also sharing their thoughts.
   
There will be a march to the nearby finish line and a moment of silence at 2:49 p.m. to mark the moment the two bombs exploded.

Boston police Commissioner Williams Evans says the anniversary is an emotional day and brings back "some terrible memories."

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is lauding the courage and leadership of Bostonians on the first anniversary of the marathon bombing that killed three people.
   
Obama is observing Tuesday's anniversary with a private moment of silence at the White House. He says in a statement that those who were injured have been an inspiration in their recovery.
   
Obama says this year's race, scheduled for Monday, will "show the world the meaning of Boston Strong as a city chooses to run again."
   
The president plans to have a moment of silence with aides in the Oval Office at 2:49 p.m., Eastern time, the moment two bombs exploded near the finish line of the marathon last April 15.
   
Vice President Joe Biden will speak at a memorial service in Boston.

BOSTON (AP) - The anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings promises to be a day of tributes to the three people who died, the more than 260 people who were hurt, and the first responders, doctors and nurses who helped them.
    
Vice President Joe Biden, Gov. Deval Patrick and former Mayor Tom Menino are among the dignitaries expected to speak Tuesday during a program at the Hynes Convention Center. Survivors of the bombing also will participate.
    
Between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., a flag-raising ceremony and moment of silence will be held at the marathon finish line, to mark the time and place where two bombs exploded on April 15, 2013.
    
Authorities say two brothers planned and orchestrated the attack. Tamerlan Tsarnaev died following a shootout with police. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is awaiting trial.

The boy was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.   His name has not been released.
