A senior-less team in the 2013-14 season, Eastern Washington University added the final piece to its men’s basketball program with the addition of power forward Kyle Reid from Los Angeles Trade Tech Junior College. Eastern head coach Jim Hayford made the announcement Wednesday, April 16, after Reid signed a letter of intent to play for the Eagles and attend EWU.

The 6-foot-7, 215-pound Reid was rated as the third-best power forward by Gerry Freitas Hoop Review Scouting Service after averaging 14.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocked shots per game as a sophomore when he earned All-South Coast honors in the North Division. He also averaged 1.0 assists and made 49.4 percent of his field goal attempts.

“We’re really excited to have Kyle join our program,” said Hayford, whose team consisting mostly of sophomores finished the 2013-14 season 15-16 overall and 10-10 in the Big Sky Conference. “The next two years he could be a real difference maker as we pursue the top echelon in the conference.”

Reid played at Bishop Montgomery High School in California, which is also where Eastern sharp-shooting guard Tyler Harvey and Ognjen Miljkovic both played. Harvey and Reid were starters together for two seasons before both graduated in 2011. Miljkovic graduated in 2013 and played at EWU as a true freshman last season.

“A big reason we got him was that he was Tyler Harvey’s teammate in high school,” Hayford said. “He saw the experience Tyler has had here and Kyle had a great recruiting visit. The opportunity to be reunited with one of his high school best friends gave us the edge over a lot of really good schools – schools that have been in the NCAA Tournament.”

Reid and Harvey helped lead Bishop Montgomery to the Del Rey League title their senior season with an 8-0 record. The Knights finished the year 20-7 and advanced to the second round of the CIF Playoffs (Southern Section Division 3AA).

Harvey averaged 18 points to earn first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division 3AA honors as a senior and has brought his high-scoring abilities to Eastern. He was a first team All-Big Sky Conference selection as a sophomore in the 2013-14 season, averaging a league-leading 21.8 points with a school-record 109 3-pointers.

All 11 of the team’s letter winners return next season, plus two redshirts. In the early signing period, the Eagles inked guard Will Ferris out of Newport High School in Bellevue, Wash.

“We looked to the next stage of building our basketball program, having everybody returning and a couple of talented redshirts,” explained Hayford on the needs of his team for the 2014-15 campaign. “We felt the one pressing need in the program was an athletic front court player to provide full-court depth and match-up against some of the better front court players in the conference. (Junior-to-be) Venky Jois can do that pretty well but he needs help. Kyle Reid solves all those issues. We were really fortunate to sign him.”

Personal: Born Dec. 1, 1993, in Cleveland, Ohio. Parents are Thomas and Stephanie Reid. Intends on majoring in business administration at Eastern.
