McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Whitworth University softball team suffered a 3-2 loss to second-seeded Pacific (Ore.) in the Northwest Conference Tournament, hosted by Linfield College, on Friday afternoon.

Pacific took a 1-0 lead after a Rachel Roberts single allowed Becca Moen to score for the Boxers. The Pirates stranded runners in the top of the first and second but were unable to plate any runs until the top of the fourth after back-to-back singles from freshman Shannon Wessel and senior Julia Johnson put runners on first and second for freshman Kayla Batastini. Batastini’s RBI single to right center scored the tying run.

Junior Alyssa Hall put the Pirates up 2-1 in the top of the fifth with a triple down the left field line, scoring senior Makenzie Hope. The Boxers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Roberts double to left field. After a scoreless sixth inning for both teams, Whitworth put a runner on in the top of the seventh as senior Taylor Gilbert drew a walk with two outs. The Boxers snagged a fly ball in center field to end the Pirate scoring threat.

A hit and a Pirate error put runners on the corners for Pacific in the bottom of the seventh and Roberts ended the game in Pacific’s favor as a sacrifice fly allowed the Boxers to send the winning run home.

Kayla Batastini was 2-3 at the plate, while Alyssa Hall went 2-4 on the day. Both Batastini and Hall batted in a run.

Freshman Madi Perez (14-6) struck out five batters and allowed two earned runs on just eight hits with two walks in 6.2 innings of work. Sara Aasness (13-4) struck out nine batters and allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks.

Whitworth moves to 26-15 on the season, and Pacific improves to 25-10 overall. The Pirates face Willamette, the fourth-seed who lost to top-seeded Linfield, 14-3, in the day’s opening game, at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Game Two
McMINNVILLE, Ore. – A five run first inning proved to be enough as the Whitworth University softball team defeated Willamette 6-2 at the Northwest Conference tournament, hosted by Linfield College, on Friday at Del Smith Stadium.

Willamette scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning, but the Pirates went to work early. After a Bearcat error put sophomore Brittany Connor on first, senior Taylor Gilbert drilled a hit to left center, scoring Connor. An RBI double from freshman Shannon Wessel put Whitworth in front and an RBI single from junior Peyton McMahon extended the lead. Freshman Kayla Batastini made it a five run inning as her double to center field plated a pair of runs. Whitworth was able to go through the entire batting order before Willamette could end the inning.

Willamette got a run back in the top of the third, but Whitworth shut the Bearcats out in the final four innings. The Pirates added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Julia Johnson drew a walk with one out. McMahon singled to left field with two outs, putting runners on first and second for Batastini, who scored Johnson with a single to right field. A pair of ground outs and a pop up ended the game in Whitworth’s favor.

Peyton McMahon went 4-4 at the plate, with a run scored and a run batted in. Julia Johnson was 2-3 at the plate with a run scored. Kayla Batastini was 2-4 with a game-high three RBI.

Freshman Madi Perez (15-6) earned the win in the circle, allowing just two runs on eight hits with a strikeout in seven innings of work. Victoria Bradshaw (3-7) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits while only recording one out in the first inning.

Whitworth improves to 27-15 on the season, while Willamette ends the season with an 18-22 record. The Pirates will play Pacific (Ore.) Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Del Smith Stadium in an elimination game. The winner will play top-seeded Linfield at 12:30 p.m.
