SPOKANE, Wash. -

As soon as the Fallen Hero Banner Project was denied from marching in this year’s Seafair Torchlight Parade, dozens rallied behind the group to show support.

“It's absolutely always good to see the community stand up with you, like I said, Spokane is amazing,” said Kim Cole, the founder of the Fallen Hero Banner Project.

Kim Cole started the Fallen Hero Banner Project after her son passed away during his second tour in Iraq in 2007. Now they honor more than 200 men and women across Washington State.

“That was the whole purpose for starting this when my son died,” Cole explained. “I want people to be able to put a face with his name. I don’t want him to just be another statistic on the news and I feel that way about all of them, so that kind of just turned into a mission for me.”

Initially, Seafair Parade Selection Committee members denied the group, but have since reversed their decision.

“Everybody is very thankful that it's been resolved because I know for a lot of us it’s been a really rough weekend, a really rough weekend,” Cole said.

Along with an outpouring of support form the community, another big sponsor of the fallen heroes stepped in to address the issue.

“I had sent the letter to the COO of Alaska Airlines as well, because they are a big sponsor of Seafair and Alaska Airlines gave us a grant for $10,000, so that we can fly the banners all over the state,” Cole said.

With so many people standing behind the group, the members of the Fallen Hero Banner Project will now march with the board of directors of Seafair during the parade. Kim says they cannot change what happened, but will move forward and march proudly.

“I intend to stand up and honor and remember our fallen until the day I die,” Cole said.

Without those heroes, moments of celebration like Seafair, would not be possible.

“Five minutes out of a parade to honor and remember those that fought for the right for us to have parades and celebrate isn't asking too much,” Cole said.

Seafair organizers also released a statement saying, “We have a great respect for the mission of the Fallen Heroes Banner Project organization and honor the efforts of the organization to memorialize those military heroes we have lost. While we are at capacity for the 2014 parade, we've made special accommodations that will allow for the Fallen Heroes Banner Project to accompany an existing entry.”

The statement goes on to say, “The Torchlight Parade is a special event - a time for us to celebrate our community, as well as honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to allow us these freedoms.”
