Eagles' Mahoney Selected as Big Sky Track Athlete of the Week

Katie Mahoney of the Eastern Washington University women’s track and field team was selected as the Big Sky Conference women’s track athlete of the week for the week of April 22 after putting together one of the best weekends ever by an Eagle distance runner at the Mt. SAC Relays (April 18) in Walnut, Calif., and Beach Invitational (April 19) in Norwalk, Calif.

Coming into the weekend with a strong seasonal best of 10:28.95 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Mahoney broke her own school record at the Mt. SAC Relays Friday, placing third in the elite open section with a time of 10:17.34.

Her new school record put an exclamation on a historic weekend for the Eagles in the steeplechase, as her teammates Catie Arrigoni (10:33.52, Mt. SAC) and Paula Gil-Echevarria (10:42.75, Beach) ran the second and third fastest times in school history behind Mahoney.

The Richland, Wash.,-native wasn’t done there however, as she went on to run a time of 4:25.33 in the 1,500 at the Beach Invite Saturday, breaking another one of her school records. Mahoney capped the weekend with a time of 2:12.40 in the 800, becoming a triple Big Sky qualifier and moving her up to the No. 2 spot all-time behind school-record holder Katie Ellison (2:11.41, 2000).

Mahoney’s time in the steeplechase ranks atop the Big Sky, 10th in the West Region and 21st in the nation amongst Division I competitors. It also is the 10th-fastest time in Big Sky Conference history. Her 1,500 time sits second in the conference and 59th in the West Region.

This is Mahoney’s first career AOTW award and the fourth-straight week an Eastern athlete has claimed the honors this outdoor season, as Jordan Arakawa was named men’s field AOTW for the previous three weeks.

Mahoney broke the steeplechase record three times during her freshman season last year. The second occasion came in a second-place finish at the Big Sky Championships, where she had a time of 10:28.52. She also set her previous record of 4:25.79 in the 1,500 at the conference meet, placing fourth. Mahoney capped that stellar freshman season with a clocking of 10:21.53 at the West Preliminary Rounds.

The sophomore out of Richland High School can be found all over the record books at Eastern. She also ranks fifth in the mile (indoors), eighth in the 3,000 (indoors), 10th in the 800 (indoors) and eighth in the 5,000 (outdoors) all-time at Eastern. She redshirted the 2014 indoor season.

Mahoney will be back on the track this weekend, as the Eagles will stay close to home for the Duane Hartman Invite on April 25-26 in Spokane, Wash.
