Washington School Bus Driver Accused Of Bullying

Posted: Updated:
OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A school bus driver in Olympia, Wash., has been placed on leave while the school district investigates accusations that he bullied a developmentally disabled 14-year-old girl.

The mother of the Washington Middle School student says she has been complaining about verbal abuse for more than a year but the district didn't act until it saw video from a surveillance camera.

The Olympian reports (http://bit.ly/1mDAMEN ) the district showed the mother video taken April 17 that shows the driver encouraging other special-needs students on the bus to call the girl names. The driver also tells the girl, who is afraid of bees, that he's going to bring a beehive on the bus.

The Olympia School District says it put the driver on leave last week for the investigation.

It's an issue many counties are dealing with, overcrowding in the jails. And it's an issue the Kootenai county commissioners say they've been trying to correct over the years with bond elections. "we have a chronic problem with overcrowding. In 2013, we spent more than 900 thousand dollars to send inmates out of county to find housing," said county commissioner Dan Green.  >>

SPOKANE, Wash. - One of the great parts about living in Spokane, is if you head out of town in any direction, you're going to run into some beautiful farm land. I grew up south of Spokane, near Plaza, and one of my favorite things to do was to sit on the porch at night and stare south towards Rosalia at all of the rolling hills of wheat, lentils, barley and peas. >>
