Cougars' Release

by WSU Cougars

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State has added Eastern Washington to its 2018 football schedule, WSU Director of Athletics Bill Moos announced Wednesday.

The game is scheduled for Sept. 15, 2018 in Martin Stadium.

“Eastern Washington has built a tremendous program over the years and continuing this series is of great appeal for college football fans throughout the Pacific Northwest,” said Moos.

The Cougars and Eagles previously announced that the teams would meet Sept. 3, 2016 in Pullman.

Washington State has won all three previous meetings in the series, including a 24-20 victory in 2012 in Pullman, the first victory for Mike Leach as the Cougar head coach. The two other meetings saw the Cougars post wins of 46-0 and 73-0 in 1907 and 1908, respectively.

Eagles' Release

by EWU Athletics

The Eastern Washington University football team will trek to Pullman, Wash., for the third time in seven seasons when EWU plays at Washington State on Sept. 15, 2018, at Martin Stadium. The announcement was made jointly by the two schools on Wednesday, April 23.

Eastern hadn’t played the Cougars since 1908 when the two schools met on Sept. 8, 2012, in a narrow, 24-20 WSU victory. The two schools also previously announced a meeting on Sept. 3, 2016, at Martin Stadium, marking the sixth-straight year the Eagles will play a Pac-12 Conference opponent.

“We look forward to having WSU on our schedule now two times in the next several seasons,” said Eastern athletic director Bill Chaves. “It is a great game for our program, University and region.”

Starting with a narrow 30-27 loss to open the 2011 season at Washington, the Eagles have now scheduled an opponent from the Pac-12 Conference in eight of nine years from 2011-2019. Eastern defeated Oregon State 49-46 in 2013, and will play at Washington in 2014 and 2019, Oregon in 2015 and WSU in 2016 and 2018.

“We appreciate the opportunities Pac-12 schools are giving us, particularly Washington State and Washington,” said Eastern head coach Beau Baldwin. “I know our players and coaches really look forward to playing these games against schools they grew up following, and it’s especially convenient and exciting for fans whenever regional teams play each other.”

The Cougars, under second-year head coach Mike Leach, finished the 2013 season 6-7 overall and 4-5 in the Pac-12. Washington State ended the year with a 48-45 loss in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl against Colorado State, whose head coach is former Eagle player and assistant coach Jim McElwain. It was the first bowl game in a decade for WSU, which ranked fourth in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision in 2013 with a school-record 368.0 yards per game.

Leach is currently 9-16 after taking over as head coach from Paul Wulff, who left as Eastern’s head coach to return to his alma mater in 2008. In 10 seasons previously at Texas Tech (2000-09), Leach led the Red Raiders to 10 bowl games and a school-record 84 victories. One of his wins was a 49-24 triumph over the Eagles on Aug. 30, 2008.

The Eagles won their first-ever game against a Pac-12 opponent when they opened the 2013 season with a 49-46 upset of 25th-ranked Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore. It was only the fourth time a team from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) has defeated a team from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.

The Eagles went on to finish 12-3 and enjoyed its first-ever 8-0 season in the Big Sky Conference. Eastern, the 2010 NCAA Division I champion, advanced to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs for the second-straight season and third in the last four years.

The Eagles are 1-9 versus current members of the Pac-12, including losses in 1907 and 1908 against Washington State, and a 2012 loss in Pullman. Eastern’s other games versus Pac-12 opponents have been against Washington (2011), Oregon State (2000, 2006, 2013), Arizona State (2002) and California (2009). Eastern has also played recent league newcomer Colorado (2008).

Eastern was a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for most of its history before becoming a member of FCS in 1984. But despite playing 27 games against NCAA Football Bowl Division members from 1983-2010 -- including four against the Pac-12 Conference -- the Eagles did not play Washington State or Washington during that time span.

The short 90-mile trek to Pullman, Wash., to face WSU in 2012 was the first varsity meeting between the two schools in more than 100 years. Eastern lost to the Cougars in 1907 (46-0) and 1908 (73-0), and were 8-10-1 from 1921-46 against WSU’s junior varsity or freshman teams.

The Eagles will play at Washington on Sept. 6, 2014, in just the second meeting all-time versus the Huskies, then will return to Seattle on Aug. 31, 2019. The Oregon game will be played on Sept. 5, 2015, at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. Eastern has never played the Ducks.

Including a season-opening 20-3 win at Idaho in 2012 and a 33-21 loss at Toledo in 2013, Eastern is now 9-22 all-time versus FBS teams.

EAGLES VS. FBS

Since the early 1980’s when it began the move to become a member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (in 1984), Eastern is now 9-22 all-time versus Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Against current Pac-12 Conference members, EWU now 1-7 (1-9 including losses to Washington State in 1907 and 1908) after a 49-46 upset of 25th-ranked Oregon State in 2013. Eastern has won two of its last four games versus FBS foes. A 35-17 win over Connecticut on Sept. 8, 2001, snapped a five-game losing streak versus FBS foes, then a 20-3 win at Idaho in 2012 snapped a 10-game skid. Here is Eastern’s complete list of games versus FBS members since 1983.
