STATEMENT FROM LIBERTY LAKE POLICE CHIEF ASMUS REGARDING THE DEATH OF SGT. CLINT GIBSON
"Early this morning, 04/25/2014 the Liberty Lake Police Department was notified that Sgt. Clint Gibson with the Liberty Lake Police Department, was found dead inside his personal vehicle. Sgt. Gibson was off duty at the time of the incident. The case is currently under investigation by the Spokane Police Department. His family and fellow law enforcement officers have been informed of this tragedy.

This is a tremendous loss for the Liberty Lake Police Department, the City of Liberty Lake, the region, and the law enforcement community. Sgt. Gibson was an outstanding officer, sergeant, and law enforcement leader. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and our department is grieving his loss. The outpouring of well wishes, and support from members of our community, family and friends, and law enforcement representatives throughout the state, demonstrates Sgt. Gibson’s tremendous positive impact on others.

Sgt. Gibson had been with the Liberty Lake Police Department since April of 2002, shortly after the department was first established. He had prior law enforcement experience as a reserve police officer with the Spokane Police Department and as a full-time officer with the Pullman Police Department and Colfax Police Department before coming to work for Liberty Lake.

He worked as a patrol officer and was promoted to patrol sergeant in 2007. Sgt. Gibson was a firearms instructor, emergency vehicle operations course instructor, defensive tactics instructor, and a member of the regional Special Response Team. He was instrumental in insuring officers were well trained and prepared for any situation they may face. He brought many innovative and ideas to the department such as the bike patrol program, enhanced in-service training, and a core value-based approach to policing. He received numerous commendations and was the recipient of the Chief’s Award three times. He received his first level supervisor career certification through the Criminal Justice Training Commission, and was a graduate of the Northwest Law Enforcement Executive Command College.

Sgt. Clint Gibson will be missed."

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Detectives have confirmed that the man found dead in the SUV "fatality collision" Friday morning in the Hancock Fabrics parking lot was Sgt. Clint Gibson, a member of the Liberty Lake Police Department. His identity was released in a letter from the Liberty Lake Police Chief after Gibson's family had been notified.

The crash happened early Friday morning near the corner of Francis/Madison in North Spokane. Police say Gibson was driving his black SUV eastbound on Francis when it veered off the road and into the Les Schwab parking lot, crossed Madison, and then ended up in the Hancock Fabrics parking lot.

Police driving by overnight thought the car resting in the parking lot looked out of the ordinary, approached it to investigate, and that's when they discovered the dead body in the SUV that had flat tires and shattered windows.

We are waiting for more information from Spokane Police and Major Crimes Investigation Unit as to the cause of this persons death.

Francis and Madison were closed overnight but are now back open to traffic.
