MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary’s College put a halt to Gonzaga University’s six-game winning streak Sunday as the Zags fell in the series finale 10-5 at Louis Guisto Field.

Gonzaga (18-24, 13-8 WCC) held the lead on two occasions before Saint Mary’s (14-29, 6-12 WCC) distanced itself late in the game.

Freshman Sam Brown put GU on the board in the second inning. Jimmy Sinatro walked to open the inning and scored on Brown’s triple down the right field line. Brown later came home on a Cabe Reiten squeeze bunt.

The Gaels took its first lead in the bottom of the third inning. Four runs scored in the inning, three of which came on a Collin Ferguson home run.

Senior Brock Slavin cut the SMC lead to 4-3 with an RBI double in the fourth. An inning later, GU tied the game on the bats of Payden Cawley Lamb and Sinatro. Lamb tripled to right field with two outs and Sinatro followed with a single to right to knot the game.

Slavin recorded his second double of the game in the sixth inning, which scored Reiten. The hit gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead that would unfortunately be short lived.

Saint Mary’s responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame and then broke away with four more in the seventh.

DonAndre Clark drove in the two runs in the sixth on a double to left field. In the seventh, it was Ricky Boas, Anthony Villa, Connor Hornsy and Clark all driving in a run on base hits off the Gonzaga relievers.

Andrew Sopko picked up the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits in six innings. Ben Brown and David Bigelow were each charged with two runs in their appearance in the seventh. GU also used Sean-Luke Brija and Karl Myers in the game.

Anthony Gonsolin got the win for Saint Mary’s. He worked six innings and allowed five runs. Brad Nease relieved him in the seventh and worked the final three innings for his third save of the year.

Gonzaga will now prepare for its last road WCC series next weekend in Provo. The Bulldogs and BYU open the series Thursday.
