Voice Activated Laser Generator

What you will need:

  • 12-18” section of 2” diameter plastic pipe (PVC or ABS)
  • Small mirror (approx. 1” in diameter)
  • Laser pointer
  • 9” balloon
  • Pencil
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Electrical tape
  • Adult supervision

Procedure:

1) Using the scissors, carefully remove the small (mouth piece) end of your balloon.

2) Stretch the balloon over one end of your 2” plastic pipe.

3) Glue your mirror to the center of your stretched out balloon.

4) Tape your pencil to the same end of your plastic pipe so that it is protruding out past your balloon.

5) Tape your laser pointer to the end of the pencil so that it will shine the laser light onto the mirror.

**Optional**

You can also place a 2”-3” adapter on the opposite end of your plastic pipe as a mouth piece. Although this is not necessary, I found it easier for adults to use this laser generator.

What is going on?

The key to sound is vibration. Laser generators use a small mirror mounted on two perpendicular motors which will vibrate the mirror at various rates to cause patterns when the laser light is reflected of this mirror. Since the key to sound is vibration, when we place the plastic tube over our mouth and make various sounds, we cause the balloon to vibrate at different rates. When the balloon vibrates, the laser light that is being reflected off of the mirror is then affected by this vibration and creates various patterns.

Try this:

Try various tones to see which affect the light the most. Do the high tones vibrate the balloon more or do the low tones? What happens when you sing? What if you just make various noises? Does it work better for one person than another?

You may notice that the farther you are away from the wall where the light is being reflected onto, the bigger and more visible the pattern.
