KENNEWICK, WA - The Tri-Cities continues to build on its reputation as a popular travel destination in Washington. The area has claimed the top spot for hotel occupancy in eastern Washington so far this year.

For the first quarter of this year, the Tri-Cities had the highest hotel occupancy rates in eastern Washington.
Over the slower winter months, Tri-Cities edged out Spokane for a 54% average occupancy rate. That's up 5% since this time last year.

In March the occupancy rate reached 63% and April is shaping up to show strong numbers as well.

The Tri-Cities Visitor and Convention Bureau says the sunshine, diverse range of activities here and popular business convention locations, helps the travel industry grow every year.

"We are growing. It is a segment of our economy, year in and year out, that we've been continuing to be able to grow that segment of the travel industry," said Kris Watkins, Tri-Cities Visitor and Convention Bureau.

Watkins says conventions and sports tournaments bring the most people to our area. Those visitors spending their dollars here made an economic impact of $6.3 million in the first three months of this year alone.
As wine tasting season kicks-off and warmer weather comes our way, the bureau anticipates more visitors to give another boost to the local travel industry.
