Gun Rights Advocates Weigh in on Castle Doctrine

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA - Gun rights advocates said new moves to strike down the law known as the Castle Doctrine are premature.

On Monday, State Representative Ellie Hill entered a draft for a law to repeal the Montana law in the wake of the deadly Grant Creek shooting.

The Castle Doctrine makes it legal for a person to use lethal force to protect themselves in their home if they felt their lives were in danger.

NRA member and President of the Montana Shooting Sports Association, Gary Marbut, said Hill should wait to change the law until after the case moves through the criminal justice system.

Marbut said there are people who abuse the law and people who own guns must inform themselves before using a firearm.

"I think it's very important that people not be satisfied with the amount of training that comes in the box with a gun, that they seek further training so that they understand what conduct is permissible and what conduct is not permissible," Marbut said.

Hill's draft will be introduced in the January legislative session.
