Cawley Lamb Leads Zags Past BYU

by Gonzaga Athletics

PROVO, Utah – Payden Cawley Lamb came through offensively and defensively for the Gonzaga University baseball team as the Zags held on for a 4-3 victory over BYU at Miller Park Friday night.

Lamb went 4-for-5 for the Zags (19-25, 14-9 WCC), which included his first collegiate home run in the fifth inning. Defensively, Lamb impressed in right field with several superb efforts including diving catch in the ninth to save a run.

Brock Whitney had four hits and a run scored to pace BYU (18-26, 8-12 WCC).

Tied at 2, Jimmy Sinatro and Cory LeBrun came through with RBI base hits in the top of the seventh to put the Bulldogs ahead. Caleb Wood, Lamb and Sinatro hit back-to-back-to-back singles with one out to score the first run. Two batters later, LeBrun singled to left field which scored another.

BYU reliever Chris Howard was tagged for the loss after recording just one out in the inning while being responsible for the two runs.

The Cougars attempted to rally in the bottom half of the frame, which chased GU starter Brandon Bailey from the game. BYU loaded the bases with one out but relievers David Bigelow and Ben Brown limited the damage. Brown came through in a critical situation as he captured the final two outs of the at bat.

Bailey got his fifth win of the season after working into the seventh. The freshman surrendered 13 hits but limited BYU to just three runs.

Brown worked a scoreless eighth inning before handing the ball to Karl Myers for the save. The senior gave up a base hit in the ninth but closed the game for the Bulldogs. Myers now has four saves on the year.

The win is just the Bulldogs fourth when being out-hit by an opponent. In addition to Lamb, LeBrun (2-for-4, RBI) had the only other multiple hit performance.

The two sides will play for the series Saturday. Gonzaga will throw right-hander Andrew Sopko while Desmond Poulson starts for BYU. First pitch is at noon.
