Kidnap Charge For Woman Accused Of Taking Son, 6

Posted: Updated:
UPDATE: SEATTLE (AP) - A 34-year-old woman accused of hogtying her mother, abducting her 6-year-old son and driving 100 mph to elude pursuing deputies has been ordered held on $1 million bail after formal charges were filed.

King County prosecutors charged Sandra Bennatts on Thursday with kidnapping, burglary and custodial interference. Court documents say Bennatts lost custody of her son several months ago and he has been living with his grandmother.

In charging papers, prosecutors say the woman knocked her mother down one flight of stairs Sunday night at the older woman's Auburn home, dragged her by her hair down more stairs and tied her up. Documents say the little boy begged his mother not to hurt his grandmother. He brought the older woman blankets and chocolate milk.

The grandmother was finally able to get help early Monday and an Amber alert was issued. Bennatts was arrested Monday after she ran out of gas on U.S. Highway 2 in the Stevens Pass area.

An Amber Alert was initially issued just after 8am Monday morning after the boy's mother, who doesn't have custody of him, forced entry into her mother's home at knife point, tied up her mother, ransacked the home and then took the child.
