Former Washington State University safety Deone Bucannon was selected No. 27 overall by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2014 NFL Draft on Thursday, May 8.

"I was overcome with emotion after they said they were going to draft me," Bucannon said over the phone from his home where he was joined by a group of about 25-to-30 family and friends to watch the draft.

Bucannon led the Pac-12 in tackles with 114 in 2013 and finished his Cougar career with 15 interceptions (3rd in school history). Bucannon was listed as a second to third round projected pick by NFL.com and was the 42nd ranked player in ESPN.com's big board.

Bucannon finished his WSU career with 384 career tackles (4th most in Cougar history), was a 3-time All Pac-12 selection and was a First-Team All-American as a senior. The 6-foot-1, 215 pound safety from Fairfield, Calif was also a Freshman All-American and played in the Reese's Senior Bowl giving teams like the Cardinals a chance to see his value.

"I went down there and I felt like they were the most interested out of any team I visited," Bucannon said after he was drafted.

The internet is abundant with people saying that Bucannon joined with the Cardinals free safety Tyrann Mathieu can become one of the hardest hitting and best backfield duo's in the NFL.

"That's an honor," Bucannon said about such comments. "It's a blessing that people are saying that. I want to go in there and prove that can happen."

But when all is said and done Bucannon will do whatever his new team asks of him.

"Whatever my roll is, whatever they need me to do, I am going to do it," Bucannon said.
