2 Confirmed Dead In Washington House Fire

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) - Fire officials say an adult and a teen have died while three others escaped from an early morning house fire in the coastal Washington city of Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Fire Chief Tom Hubbard told KOMO News that witnesses used a ladder Friday to help an elderly couple get out of the burning home, and another woman jumped from the roof into the arms of firefighters.

Neighbors told The Associated Press they awoke to screams and the smell of smoke.

Donna Hensel says her husband and another man used a ladder to help an elderly couple to safety.

The identities of the adult and teen who died were not immediately released.

Neighbors say the elderly couple was planning to move to Idaho and that family members were in the area to help them pack.

UPDATE:

Neighbors helped three adults escape but two other people were feared dead Friday as fire engulfed a house in the coastal Washington city of Aberdeen.

Witnesses used a ladder to help an elderly couple and a woman get out of the burning home, but two other people were unaccounted for, the fire department said.

Donna Hensel, who lives next door, said she woke up early smelling smoke and stepped onto her deck to find the house engulfed in flames. She called 911, and in the meantime another neighbor came by asking for a ladder.

Her husband, Mark, got a ladder and joined the other neighbor in helping the couple. Hensel said the man climbed up the ladder, broke a window and helped the couple to safety. Her husband also helped the couple down the ladder and across the street, she said.

Everyone in the house could have lost their lives if not for the efforts of the residents and police officers who arrived at the home before firefighters, Aberdeen Fire Chief Tom Hubbard told KXRO (http://bit.ly/1iyygZ0).

The couple, who are in their 70s, were getting ready to move out of that house to Idaho, she and another neighbor, Lea Kemplin, said. The couple's family members had come to the area to help them pack and move.

"Thank God they're OK, but they lost family members," Hensel said, sobbing in a telephone interview.

A neighbor who lives across the street saw the fire when she awoke.

"I heard someone screaming," Bev Brown said. "The house was engulfed in flames, shooting out. It was terrible. It was awful."

Kemplin, a neighbor who is friends with the couple, said she believes the couple's adult daughter and a grandchild were missing in the blaze.

Aberdeen is about 80 miles west of Seattle.
