by Gonzaga Athletics

SPOKANE, Wash. – UC Davis scored the first six runs of the game Friday night as the Gonzaga University baseball team dropped the series opener 7-2 at Patterson Baseball Complex.

The setback slides the Bulldogs record to 20-26. Gonzaga is 5-17 in non-league games.

UC Davis starter Harry Stanwyck held the Bulldogs hitless until the fourth inning when Jimmy Sinatro doubled to left field. Gonzaga’s only multiple hit inning came in the seventh when Sam Brown and Cory LeBrun each recoded a base knock. Brown later scored that inning on a Cabe Reiten sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs second run scored in the eighth inning. With runners in scoring position, Sinatro grounded out to the shortstop and on the play Mitchell Gunsolus trotted home.

GU’s pitching staff was roughed up for 15 hits. Freshman starter Brandon Bailey was tagged for the loss after giving up three runs on nine hits in four innings of action. Bailey also notched three strikeouts.

Relievers Will Abram and Wyatt Mills also made appearances in the game. Abram was responsible for three runs on four hits while recording just one out. Mills pitched a career-high 4.2 innings and limited the Aggies to one run on two hits.

UC Davis’ Austin March paced the Aggies offense with three RBI on three hits. Izaak Silva also provided a strong performance with his 4-for-5 effort.

The two sides resume the series Saturday. Sophomore Andrew Sopko will start for the Zags while UC Davis counters with Spencer Koopmans. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
