SPOKANE, Wash. -- After jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Gonzaga allowed Washington State to tie the game in the fifth, and rallied in the ninth to defeat the Cougars 5-4 on Tuesday, May 13, at the Patterson Baseball Complex.

Caleb Wood hit a leadoff double, stole third on a past ball and came in for the game-winning run on a wild pitch by the Cougars' (22-25) Matt Bower to secure the game and the series for the Zags (23-26). Wood finished the game going 3-for-5 at the plate with 2 runs scored.

Gonzaga came out of the gates swinging, scoring four runs right away, capped off by a two-run home run off the bat of Sam Brown, the first of his collegiate career.

WSU continued to chip away, scoring a run in the second inning thanks to a leadoff double by P.J. Jones, he stole second and scored on an error on the same play to end the drought. The Cougs added two more in the top of the fourth off of Patrick McGrath's two-run bomb and tied the game in the fifth off thanks to a pinch-hit RBI from Cooper Elliot.

The game remained tied for three and a half innings despite Washington State threatening in the seventh, and Gonzaga loading the bases in the eighth, before Wood won it in the ninth.
