SUNNYSIDE, WA - An apparent cluster of birth defects in our region is sparking public concern. NBC Right Now is working to get the latest. We had a team in Sunnyside at the first of two public forums this week.

Doctors and panelists from the field of public health spoke about what they have found and what they are looking into. Right now, they say one major possibility leading to these defects could be nitrates found in our drinking water.

The doctors did not have a single factor that they believe is causing these cases because the cause of the neural tube defects is not completely known to physicians.

After the meeting, NBC Right Now met a father who lost his child just days after the baby was born.

"Progress is being made. It's slow, but progress. I got some answers and still a lot of questions," Don Dufault told our reporter.

Some of those questions may be answered in the second forum which will be held in Kennewick at the Benton Franklin Health District Building Wednesday at 6:00P.M.

The panel says they will continue local research for the next year.
