Spokane Public Schools Delay Extending Length Of School Day

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Public Schools Board of Directors announced at the May 14 regular session to delay extending the length of the school day for the 2014-15 school year. Last November, a task force made up of educators and a variety of school district support departments looked at ways to increase busing efficiency, as well as making the school day longer to be consistent with the norms from around the nation and the state.

After exploring a variety of options that took into account length of daylight, before- and after-school activities, transportation, and other issues, the task force explored a day that included an extra 30 minutes per day at the elementary level, and several minutes additional at the middle and high school levels. The group dissected the school day into individual minutes to determine optimum use of the day as well as impact on families.

Through community feedback and information presented, the board determined it was in the best interest of families to keep the start and end times for the school day the same as the 2013-14 school year at this late juncture. “The board was unanimous in agreement that we need to increase the amount of time spent in the classroom gaining meaningful instruction,” said Dr. Jeff Bierman, school board president. “We will continue to communicate to district administration and staff throughout the coming weeks the importance to align the time our students spend in class closer to the state and national models, while also increasing efficiency in our transportation system."
