MEMORIAL DAY Events To Honor Those Who Gave Their Lives

KHQ.COM - Memorial day is set aside to honor the men and women who have given their lives while serving our country. Memorial Day originally began to honor and celebrate Union Soldiers who died during the American Civil War. Now, we also honor all who have passed on before us. Local cemeteries will fly over 3,500 flags, honoring those we've lost.

Here are some of the events happening locally that all are invited to attend:

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ACTIVITIES (Saturday, May 24th - Monday, May 26th)

Antique and Classic Cars on display in the parking area of Riverside Memorial Park

American Flags on display at all cemeteries

The New Flag Museum open at Pines Cemetery (FREE ADMISSION)

The Battle of Deep Creek puts on a reenactment of the American Civil War at Deep Creek Farms

MONDAY MAY 26th

Spokane-Cheney Memorial Gardens:
10:00 A.M. - Memorial Day Services conducted by Greater Spokane Elks #228
Featured Speaker from the Washington National Guard

Fairmount Memorial Park
11:00 A.M. - Memorial Day Services conducted by The Melvin M. Smith Detachment of the Marine Corps League.
Featured Speaker Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich

Dedication Ceremony For US Air Force Captain Pinckney
9:00 A.M. - There will be a memorial plaque dedicated to US Air Force Captain Pinckney at Pavillion Park in Liberty Lake, WA. Captain Pinckney was killed along with two other airmen when their refueling plane went down over Kyrgyzstan in May of 2013. Captain Pinckney was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base and was an active community member. The ceremony will be combined with the Centennial Rotary's Annual Memorial Day Pancake Breakfast from 8-10 A.M. in the park, which all patrons are welcome to attend.

Heritage Funeral Home and Crematory

9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. - “Remembering A Giant of American Industry: Henry Ford” This is a musical entertainment event celebrating the “Jazz Age” from the “Roaring ‘20s” at noon and 2 p.m. in the Heritage Chapel. There will also be pictures and automobile memorabilia on display, a Veterans display, an aerospace display and antique and classic cars featuring Henry’s finest on display. A Tree of Remembrance and refreshments for all to enjoy will be available in the Heritage reception room.

"Serving Those Who Served" Washington State Department Of Veterans Affairs
10:30 A.M. - The Community is cordially invited to attend the Washington Department of Veteran Affairs’ Memorial Day Ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Project Joy Orchestra will provide a musical tribute beginning at 10:30 a.m. Parking is available at the cemetery with overflow available along Ritchey Road. Please arrive early as parking near the event area is limited.

Note: In order to preserve the dignity and honor of our veterans final resting place, please observe the following rules of behavior while visiting the cemetery grounds: •Smoking is not allowed on the grounds, in any building or the committal shelter. •Pets are not allowed at any time, with the exception of properly identified service animals. •Littering is not allowed, please use one of the many receptacles provided. •Altering a headstone in any manner is prohibited. (i.e., marking, sitting on, placing objects upon, attaching photographs or keepsakes to, etc.)

Free Lunch for Veterans and Active Duty Military

7:00 A.M. - 10:00 P.M. - Active duty and prior military service members, regardless of protected veteran status, are eligible to eat for free with proof of military service required at the following locations:

Capone’s Pub & Grill (Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls and Hayden locations), 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Michael D’s Eatery, 7 a.m.-1 p.m.

Fedora Pub and Grille, 7 a.m.-10 p.m.

Monetary donations, which will be given to the participating restaurants to help defray the cost, are being sought. Tax-deductible donations can be made out to VFW Post 889 with “Veterans Lunch” in the memo and mailed to event organizers at Memorial Day Lunch, c/o Patti Leach at 8257 Raspberry Lane, Hayden, ID 83835.

Memorial Day Service

9:30 A.M. - Presented by the Medical Lake Cemetery Association. This historic cemetery has 61 veterans, many from the Civil War. Please note that this cemetery is not related to the Washington State Veterans’ Cemetery on Espanola Road.

Hayden Memorial Day Ceremonies

10 A.M. - Laying of a Wreath and Tolling of the Boats ceremony at Honeysuckle Beach to honor those lost at sea will include a rifle salute, prayer and taps. The main ceremony at 11 a.m. includes a presentation of colors, bagpipe music, the national anthem sung by Dave Sheldon, rifle salute, taps, address by Staff Sergeant Ryan Rogers and retiring of the colors.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon about 3pm on the west side of Spokane's South Hill between Squelch Golf Course and High Drive. By 6pm it had grown to 30 acres and moved to within 75 yards of several homes on High Drive.
