YAKIMA, WA - Modern medicine does wonders to cure ailments, and it's constantly creating new ways to heal people. And now, a new state of the art neck and back surgery is being performed locally in Yakima.

It's something Jerelyne Madison doesn't take for granted anymore, riding her bike.

"There's like a freedom and the wind and you just can't get that in a car," Jerelyn said.

That's because she almost had the ability to ride taken away from her. While sitting at a stop sign last year, Jerelyne was rear ended violently by a teenager who accidentally pressed the gas instead of the brake. Two of her vertebrae became herniated and she suffered though a year of pain.

"Quality of life was just boring," Jerelyn said. "I couldn't do anything, I couldn't do the things I wanted to do."

Thanks to a brand new, state of the art procedure, Jerelyn had two artificial discs placed in her neck that allowed for a free range of motion. Only a handful of doctors in the country know how to do this procedure and one of them is right here at Regional Hospital.

Dr. Hoan Tran is the man behind this new operation. Before only one disc replacements were available, but starting this year, Dr. Tran has been approved by the FDA to perform two disc replacements that allow shorter recovery times and help keep necks and backs healthier as younger patients age.
"When I tell my patients that they are really getting state of the art surgery, they are really excited about that," Dr. Tran said.

Dr. Tran says it's extremely rewarding to see his patients without any pain.

"That makes me completely happy for them because it essentially gives their life back."

The only side effect Jerelyn has to show from her disc replacement is a 4 inch scar on her neck, and she doesn't mind that at all.
"It represents the life that I had before the car accident and what I have now," Jerelyn said. "So I'm proud to have it."

Jerelyn's freedom today was all made possible by local modern medicine. Dr. Tran says this new surgery is most effective in younger patients who have a long use of their spine ahead of them. The free range of motion keeps their necks and backs healthier for decades after the surgery.
