    SPOKANE, Wash. - Wednesday night into Thursday morning Sprague Ave. was blocked off between S. Sipple and Vista for further investigation and diagramming of the roadway where 15-year-old Ryan Holyk was hit by a Spokane Valley Police Officer while riding his bike. Holyk later passed from his injuries. The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team was on scene as part of this ongoing investigation.>>

    SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash.- A 15-year-old boy remains in critical condition after being struck by a Spokane Valley Police Department patrol car while riding his bike on Friday night . A Spokane Valley Police Deputy was heading westbound on Sprague to assist with an arrest in a domestic violence case when he struck Ryan Holyk at the intersection of Sprague and Vista while Holyk was riding his bike.>>
    SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash.- A 15-year-old boy remains in critical condition after being struck by a Spokane Valley Police Department patrol car while riding his bike on Friday night . A Spokane Valley Police Deputy was heading westbound on Sprague to assist with an arrest in a domestic violence case when he struck Ryan Holyk at the intersection of Sprague and Vista while Holyk was riding his bike.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - Spokane County Sheriff's Office has released the name of the deputy who hit the boy on his bike on May 23rd.

Spokane Valley Deputy Joseph Bodman was heading westbound on Sprague to assist with an arrest in a domestic violence case when he struck Ryan Holyk, who was riding his bike at the intersection of Sprague and Vista, just after 10:30pm. Holyk was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.

Witnesses say the deputy swerved to miss the boy, but clipped him on the bike and sent him spinning. Witnesses also tell us the deputy did not have his emergency lights on but that he appeared to be going the speed limit. Deputy Bodman says he had a green light when he crossed the intersection.

Deputy Bodman has approximately 25 years of experience in law enforcement.He began his career as a Reserve Police Officer with the Spokane Police Department in 1985.

Deputy Bodman worked as a Reserve Officer until he was hired with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office in 1989. While with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Bodman was a Field Training Officer for four years and a K9 handler for six years.

Deputy Bodman worked at the patrol capacity his entire career until he transferred to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office in 2002. Since he has been employed with Spokane County, Deputy Bodman has continued to work as a patrol deputy and has been a Field Training Officer for approximately eight years.

Deputy Bodman was recently selected to be a Sheriff’s Office Emergency Vehicle Operations Course instructor (EVOC).
