ELTOPIA, WA - Paramedics airlifted a one-year-old child to Trios Hospital Friday with non-life threatening injuries after being ejected from a car.

The accident happened just after 11 a.m. on Highway 395, 10 miles north of Pasco near Eltopia. Troopers say the driver of a Honda Civic was speeding up to 100 miles per hour after he noticed his child was choking on a penny in the backseat. As this was happening the driver was cut off by another car who was trying to switch lanes, causing the car to flip multiple times into the median.

"There is a car seat in the vehicle. It's installed properly, but the bolts are extremely loose on it which leads us to believe the child was not in the car seat at the time, and given the fact the story the parents are telling us, the child was choking on a penny at the time the collision occurred, we're thinking they most likely had the child out with them on their lap," said Trooper Rob Morris, Washington State Patrol.

The driver and passenger were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Troopers say if you're ever in this situation it's best to pull over, call 911, and perform the heimlich maneuver until help arrives.
