SPOKANE, Wash. - Temperatures are expected to climb this week into the high 70's to low 80's, and summer is less than a month away. As the mercury rises, SCRAPS wants to remind you that the warmer weather can be dangerous to your pets.

SCRAPS Regional Director, Nancy Hill, said in a press release on Monday, "Every summer, we respond to numerous calls of animals being left in cars. Inside a car, the temperature will rapidly increase and can overwhelm a pet in a very short time period - sometimes with fatal consequences."

Since dogs are unable to sweat, being left in a car, even for a minute or two and with the window cracked, it doesn't take long before they can become overheated.

"The temperature outside doesn't have to be in the 90's or more for a problem to exist," said Hill. " On a 78 degree day, temperatures in a car parked in the shade can exceed 90 degrees, and hit a scorching 160 degrees if parked in the sun."

On top of it being unsafe for your pet, you could face a hefty fine, even felony charges. Anyone leaving a pet in a car during warm weather may be charged with Confinement in an Unsafe Manner, which is a misdemeanor, and you may be charged with Animal Cruelty, which could result in felony charges.

The car isn't the only dangerous place for a pet though. If your dog is an outside animal, you need to provide plenty of water and shelter from the sun. SCRAPS even has free dog houses available for people who are in need of one.

If you see anyone leaving an animal inside a car during warm weather, SCRAPS asks that you call them immediately at 477-2533 right away.
