Federal Wildlife Investigators Search for Clues in Grizzly Bear Shooting Death

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

Federal wildlife investigators are searching for the person responsible for shooting and killing a grizzly bear in the Gallatin National Forest.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officers said that hikers found the grizzly bear carcass near the Cache Creek and Taylor Fork roads about 14 miles south of Big Sky.

They said that the bear was likely killed over Memorial Day weekend and hope someone in the area heard shots or saw suspicious activity.

Grizzly bears are protected under the Endangered Species Act, so killing one is a federal offense.

Anyone with information about the shooting should contact USFWS Law Enforcement at (406) 427-7355 or 1-800-TIP-MONT.

You may be eligible for a $1,000 cash reward if information leads to a conviction.
