SPOKANE, Wash. -

What happened at Reynolds High School in the Portland metro area Tuesday morning hits far too close to home for school leaders all across the Inland Northwest.

“Our heart goes out to the community and we all just hope that it doesn’t happen here,” Spokane Public Schools spokesperson Kevin Morrison told KHQ’s Kelsey Watts.

Morrison says all Washington schools are required to do nine safety drills a year; WAC (Washington Administration Code) used to mandate that six of them be for fire and three for crisis. But this last year, but in light of the events across the nation of late, changed it to six crisis and three fire.

Morrison said the district also regularly updates a district-wide emergency manual, containing floor plans, evacuation routes, contact numbers and much more – all made available to law enforcement.

“It covers everything from an aircraft landing on the school, to floods, to volcanic ash, to the situation we’re talking about today,” he added.

The district also relies on a call/text alert system called “Bright Arrow” to notify parents and students in case of an emergency, but that the level of notification depends on the level of threat. Morrison said the most important thing for parents and students to do is register and regularly update their phone numbers (http://www.spokaneschools.org/domain/3705).

KHQ also called 20 other local districts asking about emergency plans and communications systems. The following is meant to be a rough overview based on the information we were able to gather in a matter of hours; if you have questions about policies in your local district, contact them directly.

School districts who responded saying that they have either a calling system, texting system, and/or emailing system: Central Valley, East Valley, West Valley, Freeman, ESD, Plummer-Worley, Lakeland, Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Genesee, Troy/Potlatch, Whitepine. (Many cited that they used different systems to reach out to parents: Skyward/Skylert, Honeywell Instant Alert System, Alert Now, School Reach, etc.)

Districts who confirmed they update their websites during a crisis: Central Valley, East Valley, West Valley, ESD, Coeur d'Alene, Genesee

Districts who confirmed they had either Facebook or Twitter updates: Coeur d'Alene, Genesee, West Valley
