Softball Tournament in Hermiston Honors Man and Raises Awareness of Skin Cancer

HERMISTON, Ore. - A co-ed softball tournament in Hermiston got underway Friday night. It's called For the Love and it's in honor of Jeremy Howard. Howard was a baseball fan and a family man and he died of melanoma.

For five years in a row now the Howard family has hosted the tournament on Father's Day weekend. It's meant to honor Jeremy's memory and to bring awareness to the dangers of skin cancer. To kick off the tournament everyone stands on the third base line and gets sprayed with sunscreen.

"I don't want people to go through what I've gone through. My dad died of skin cancer and I just want to show the world that we can put on sunscreen," said Jeremy's daughter, Peyton Howard.

"I mean it's my dad, so of course I want everyone to remember him. I don't want his image to go away ever but I feel like with something like this, it's two sided. They're always going to remember, always be a part of it but they're also seeing the bigger picture. That it could happen to anyone," said another one of Jeremy's daughters, Lindzey Ramos.

The tournament runs through Sunday. This year, teams came from as far as Vancouver. 

The tournament also doubles as a fundraiser for a scholarship program started by the Howard family. Each year two high school athletes are awarded scholarships from the tournament's money.

He was driving a silver 2004 Buick Century, going east on Interstate 82 in Yakima County when he was pulled over for a traffic infraction.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports the Yakima City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution for city officials to request state or federal assistance should the city require help in responding to the effects of about 4 million cubic yards.
