Community Celebrates Ryan Holyk's Life

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

Ryan was a student at West Valley High School. He loved playing video games, riding bikes, hanging out with close friends, and causing havoc, as someone said at Saturday's service.

"His peers gravitated toward him both in and out of the classroom, attracted by his mischievous smile and kind heart," said someone from West Valley High School who spoke at the service.

"Ryan was the most stubborn, strong willed, caring, sensitive, and compassionate individual I've ever known," said a friend of Ryan's who spoke at the memorial.

However, it is his big heart and contagious smile that everyone remembers most.

"He was always happy just everywhere he went," said Ryan's friend Shelby Breen. "He just always had the biggest smile."

Over and over again, people kept sharing that Ryan was the type of kid who would help anyone who needed it. Friends say Ryan was a goof ball, with a larger than life personality.

"He was just the funniest guy," Breen said. "Whenever you were around him you couldn't just not laugh, he was the greatest."

Friends and family shared memories, saying nothing made him happier than being with his friends and putting a smile on their faces.

It is clear this young man will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Previous Story:

Ryan Holyk was struck by a Deputy Joseph Bodman in May near the intersection of Sprague and Vista.

Witnesses say the deputy swerved to miss the boy, but clipped him on the bike and sent him spinning. Witnesses also tell us the deputy did not have his emergency lights on but that he appeared to be going the speed limit. Deputy Bodman says he had a green light when he crossed the intersection.

This week Spokane Police shut down that same area to investigate the scene. We were told they wanted to determine how fast the deputy was traveling, what he was bale to see and if he could have avoided hitting Holyk.

Holyk spent almost two weeks in the hospital and passed away earlier this month.

Hundreds gathered at Ryan Holyk's funeral to share memories and celebrate his life. He was 15 years old.
