NBCRightNow.com - U.S. Senators confirm the first Latino United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Washington.

Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) spoke on the Senate floor Tuesday morning, urging their colleagues to support the historic nomination of Judge Salvador Mendoza, Jr.

Judge Mendoza is currently a judge in the Superior Court for Benton and Franklin Counties. He has held the position since May of 2013 when J
udge Craig J. Matheson stepped down after 26 years of dedicated service. Judge Mendoza is widely respected within the state's legal community, and has dedicated much of his life working on behalf of children and families throughout eastern Washington.

Judge Mendoza has also served as Judge Pro-Tempore in Benton County Superior Court and Franklin County Juvenile District Court. He is also a partner in a Kennewick law firm with an emphasis on adult and juvenile criminal law. Mendoza helped start the Juvenile Drug Court program, and has been a proponent of equal access to justice through his work with Benton-Franklin Legal Aid Society and served as a Columbia Basin College trustee.

Mendoza takes the position of Judge Lonny Suko, who served in Yakima. But Mendoza could swap offices with Judge Stan Bastian of Wenatchee who was recently confirmed to replace Judge Ed Shea in Richland. A switch would put Mendoza and Bastian closer to their home towns.
