Wayward Package Stumps Sandpoint Man, Crisscrosses Country

SANDPOINT, Idaho -

We’ve all had a package or two we’ve anxiously tracked online, but Terry Allen’s story beats most.

“When I do receive it, it’s going to have more ink on it than the pope’s passport,” Allen jokingly told KHQ.

The Sandpoint man made an order on Ebay on May 27th that he expected to arrive in a matter of days. But when it didn’t show, he started checking the tracking number and what he found blew him away.

“It’s like groundhogs day, it just keeps going,” he added.

The package shipped from China to San Francisco, then made its way to Spokane and Newport – just 30 miles from Allen’s house – but then returned back to Spokane and was sent across the country to Dulles, Virginia, and Merrifield, Virginia. From there? It went back to Spokane and Newport – but then went back to Dulles and Merrifield on the east coast. It was sent back once again to the west coast, arriving in Boise before Spokane and Newport for the third time. It arrived in Sandpoint on June 16th.

So what happened? KHQ checked with the USPS and a spokesperson said the package was given a bad barcode at the point it was originally shipped from China; the machines that read the barcodes essentially didn’t know where to send the package.

USPS apologized for the delay, but Allen’s not angry – he had a good laugh over the whole thing.

“I was in no hurry to get it,” he added. “The people at work, I'd check it at lunchtime and they'd say, ‘Well, where's your package today?’ So it's turned into a joke."

You may be wondering what was inside the package the crisscrossed the country: a 12-pin connector worth $7 dollars. Good thing Allen’s order came with free shipping.

I grew up south of Spokane, near Plaza, and one of my favorite things to do was to sit on the porch at night and stare south towards Rosalia at all of the rolling hills of wheat, lentils, barley and peas. >>
