Dave Law's Fishing Forecast: Finicky Amber Lake Trout

Posted: Updated:
We spent part Memorial Day out at Amber Lake (12 miles southwest of Cheney, WA). This lake is a favorite stop for anglers statewide to test their skills against feisty rainbow trout from 12 to 20 plus inches. But, beware…like today, it can get windy as winds are channeled from the open farmlands to the south. Thank goodness, I had an electric motor (that's the only motor allowed on the lake). Tried one fly, then another, and several more with very little luck...then, JACKPOT! Those Amber Lake Rainbows really liked the muddler minnow today. Would have fished longer, but those nasty winds & the threat of rain finally got the best of us. Typically, there's no rush to get out early, just enjoy a mid AM to early afternoon fish or soak up the evening quiet when the winds usually die down. Couple of points to remember: Amber is a selective gear lake…use single point barbless hook artificial lures, Limit is 2 (14” minimum) and except for the immediate launch area, all of the shoreline around the lake is private land.
