College Basketball Analyst Visits Montana State

Posted: Updated:

Montana State Head Basketball Coach Brian Fish has his eyes set on playing in March. Although

it may not be time for basketball season quite yet, the new coach is motivating his team with the help of a special guest speaker.

"The theme of our team this year is preparing to play in March because I'm not sure if we've ever woke up every day wanting to play in March,” said Coach Fish. “Understanding the sacrifice when things aren't going right to be able to play in March."

Coach Fish is motivating his new team, and he's doing so by calling his friends for help.

That includes college basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb.

Who coach fish met through Gottlieb's brother in the mid-90s.

"The college basketball community is pretty small, even though there's a ton of schools,” Gottlieb said. “Once you get on the west coast, my brother was an assistant at Cal during the previous six years, now he's at Oregon State. All those ties together, doing a couple of Oregon games the last couple of years helped keep that relationship going. So we go back a long ways and once you're friends, you're friends."

On Monday, the MSU basketball team started practicing together.

On day two, the team got a visit from Gottlieb himself.

"I talked about how you can use the platform of playing at Montana State not just for your basketball career, but for the rest of your life,” said Gottlieb. “There's some lessons you have to learn. Some they'll have to learn the hard way, and some I can kind of teach them."

Gottlieb's message to the Bobcats was more than just how to perform on the court.

The current college basketball analyst, discussed life after basketball.

"Building kind of a community of support will help your basketball career, but then help you exponentially when you get out of school,” Gottlieb said. “You want to hang around? You want to work at one of the resorts? There's so many people that have ties to the area and they live elsewhere. If you want to be a part of something special, than I think you have to let people in, and then of course, you have to do it the right way."

Gottlieb spoke with the 6th Man Club.

He spoke about the importance of community support, and how fans contribute to a successful team.
