Lets talk 'pot' with parents and experts

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash - Lets talk "pot". Parents and experts weigh in on talking to kids about marijuana use in the age of legalization.

The Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council says it's received several phone calls from parents wondering how to talk to their kids now about legal marijuana. Linda Thompson with GSSAC says "smoking marijuana or using marijuana is becoming much more open." And because of that Thompson says changing the conversation and teaching kids how to process the social impacts of a now legal substance are critical. "The conversation has to change about speaking up to other parents to each other and in neighborhood meetings" Thompson says.

KHQ also spoke with a Stephanie French a mother and parent of 6 kids. She says she and her husband have discussed marijuana openly with their kids and the affects it could have on someone using it underage. "The issue is now out in the open and people are now having to get past the point of not discussing it." French says. The Seattle Children's Hospital along with the Social Development Research Group released a 12-page guide for parents and how to talk to kids about underage marijuana use.
