NACHES, WA - The rain started Thursday evening and went all through the night in Yakima and just to the north in Naches.  For all the cherry growers who are still harvesting fruit, the extra water could be really bad for their business.

At Thompson’s Farms in Naches, Growers said it rained all night and when farmers started their work in the morning, the first thing was to start up their blower, which dries off the rain-soaked cherries.

They have been growing cherries for more than 100-years at Thompson’s Farms and every summer there is always the chance of a summer storm to hit.

John Thompson who owns the farm said they were able dry off the cherries today before it was too late.

"It knocks the water.  What it does is when a tree hits, it'll shake that water out of there and we want to get that water out of that cup because that's where they're going to split," Thompson said.

He also said the cherries absorb the extra water, and since there is not enough room in the fruit it splits open rendering the fruit unusable.

Another thing that can happen is mold will start growing on the cherry where the stem meets the fruit, which turns buyers away from the product and brings in less money.

Luckily this year the rain came at the end of the season so there really was not much of a loss compared to last summer when the rains hit early and lasted all season.
