Sweets Top Pippins in Extra Innings

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA – The Yakima Valley Pippins entered extra innings for the first time this season, but came out on the losing end of a 5-3 affair against the Walla Walla Sweets Monday night at County Stadium.

The game had the looks of an offensive shootout early on, as both teams exchanged runs in the 1st inning. Sean Bouchard and Kevin Morgan each drove in runs for Walla Walla (7-12) against Yakima Valley starter Austin Woodward, while Ryan Rosa tripled in a run and then scored on a wild pitch from Sweets starter Spencer Hobson to even the game at 2-2.

Another RBI single from Bouchard in the 2nd gave the Sweets a 3-2 lead, but the Pippins (15-9 overall, 12-7 West Coast League) tied it up again in the 4th with a solo home run from Vince Fernandez, taking over the top spot on the team with his third home run of the summer.

From there, the game turned into a pitcher’s duel, as Hobson and Woodward retired hitter after hitter, each getting in a rhythm to halt the scoring. Woodward exited after six innings, while Hobson came out after seven.

Despite a threat by the Sweets in the 9th against reliever Kenny Rosenberg, the game went into extra innings. In the 10th, Rosenberg and reliever Nick Kern got into a jam, but Kern came on and struck out the final two hitters to leave a pair of runners on base.

With Sweets reliever Jesse Houser silencing the Pippins bats, the game continued to the 11th, where the Sweets finally broke through on a two-run double from Andrew Mendenhall against Kern to give the Sweets a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.

The loss ended the Pippins’ six-game winning streak, while snapping a five-game losing streak for Walla Walla. The two teams duel again Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., with Brandon Williams on the hill for the Pippins, opposite Walla Walla’s Cody Carroll.
