Washington state issues 24 marijuana shop licenses

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: SEATTLE (AP) - Washington issued its first 24 licenses Monday to shops to sell recreational marijuana.

The state Liquor Control Board licensed 14 stores in western Washington and 10 in eastern Washington.

Spokane has three stores. Vancouver, Tacoma and Bellingham each have two. Seattle and the other cities on the list have one each.

A couple of small towns each have a store: Bingen, population 725, in the Columbia River Gorge, and Winthrop, population 400, in the north Cascades.

The first licenses were issued in the early morning hours so stores would be able to open their doors at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

UPDATE:  SEATTLE (AP) - Washington state has issued its first retail marijuana licenses.

A year and eight months after the state's voters legalized the drug for adults over 21, the first soon-to-be pot shops received emails before 2 a.m. PDT Monday giving them official word that they'd be able to open for business on Tuesday if they're ready.

Among them is just one store in Seattle, Cannabis City. Owner James Lathrop plans to open his doors at noon on Tuesday.

The state started licensing legal pot growers in March, but only about a dozen have product ready for shipping to the newly licensed stores. Big crowds, high prices and shortages are expected for the historic first sales.

Marijuana sales began in January in Colorado, the only other state that has legalized marijuana.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

SEATTLE (AP) - One year and eight months after voters in Washington and Colorado stunned much of the world by legalizing marijuana, the sale of heavily regulated and taxed cannabis begins in Washington this week.

The first few stores are opening amid talk of high prices, shortages and rationing. Sales began in Colorado at the start of the year.

As many as 20 shops in Washington, out of a planned 300-plus, should receive their licenses on Monday. They could open the next day, but how many planned to remained unclear. While Seattle had just one store ready, at least two were ready for licensing in some smaller cities, including Bellingham, Tacoma and Spokane.

Many stores were busy making final preparations in the days before stores open, preparing for crowds and trying to line up additional supply.
