Yakima Valley Pippins Top Victoria 6-5 in 14-inning Marathon

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA – The Yakima Valley Pippins played the longest game of their young history Monday night at County Stadium, prevailing 6-5 in 14 innings over the Victoria HarbourCats.

After allowing a run on a Mitch Skaggs RBI single in the bottom of the 1st, the HarbourCats (12-13) got to Pippins starter Brandon Williams from the 2nd through the 5th innings. Bryce Greager’s RBI double got the scoring started in the 2nd. An RBI groundout from Hunter Mercado-Hood made it 3-1 after the 3rd, before Sean Watkins added another run with a homer out to left-center field in the 4th. Williams would give up another run, this one unearned in the 5th to extend the Victoria lead to 5-1.

The Pippins (15-10), who struggled early in the game with runners in scoring position, got back in the game on a two-run single by Jake Roberts in the 6th inning to make it 5-3.

Shawn Wardian tied the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the 8th, at which point both bullpens locked down for the foreseeable future.

After four scoreless innings from Mitch Yada and another 1 2/3 scoreless frames from Connor Lau, Matt Trask took to the mound for the Pippins and helped keep the game scoreless. His counterpart, Preston Ryan, countered punch for punch to register scoreless innings the first four extra frames.

However, both pitchers ran into threats in the 13th inning. Trask put runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out, before a failed bunt and two strike outs got him out of the jam without a run across.

The Pippins came close to ending the game in the bottom of the inning, as Justin Jacobs tried to score from first base on a double by Vince Fernandez, but a good relay throw got Jacobs at the plate to send the game to the 14th.

After escaping another jam in the top of the 14th, Trask and the Pippins would finally break through in the bottom of the 14th. Taylor Snyder led off with a single, then moved to second base on a delayed steal. After a pop out by Tim Hergert, Josh McCoy, who just joined the team last Wednesday, delivered an RBI single to right-center field to score Snyder from 2nd base and end the 14-inning, 4 hour and 25 minute affair for the remainder of the announced crowd of 898.

The win ended a seven-game winning streak for the HarbourCats, while it prevented the Pippins from losing three straight games for the first time all year. The Pippins look to claim the series win Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. as they send Eli Morgan to the mound against Alex Garcia.
